-
- WHY ST MIRROR:
-
- ST Mirror was created in order to help you protect your hard drive
- from a virus or accidental erasure of the Boot, FATs and Directory
- sectors of any hard drive partition. We do this by creating two
- data files from the information found on your hard drive. One file
- contains the Boot, FATs and Directory sectors while the other
- contains a complete root directory listing of the mirrored
- partition. Also if you are about take on the task of cleaning up
- your hard drive, then you will want to run this program first,
- that way if you delete a file or even a folder by mistake you can
- recover it using the restore option of ST Mirror.

- LANGUAGE:
-
- ST MIRROR was written and compiled using GFA Basic by GFA
- Systemtechnik and now distributed in the USA by Antic Software,
- 544 Second Street, San Francisco, CA 94107 For more information
- call (800)-234-7001.
-
- LOADING:
-
- To run the ST MIRROR program just double-click on the filename. In
- a moment the title/work screen will appear. You can exit the
- program by clicking on the 'Exit ST Mirror' menu item.
-
- USING THE MENUS:
-
- Moving the mouse pointer to any one of the main menu titles will
- cause the menu to open (drop down) and display all the items
- available to the user under that heading. Now let's take a look at
- the main menus and the items in them.
-
- DESK:
-
- The first menu item is 'About ST Mirror', this is a repeat of
- the bootup dialog box and gives a brief explanation of the
- program, the language used to create it and the author.
-
- The second thru sixth menu items will give you full access to
- any desk accessory you may have loaded.
-
- Note: We recommend the use of only one desk accessory with this
- program, The Protector (a hard drive write protect
- accessory) from David Small & Dan Moore found in the
- Spring 1987 Volume 1, Number 4 issue of STart magazine.
-
- FILE:
-
- The first menu item is 'Disk File Listing', clicking on this
- will open a window and display a complete file listing of the
- default floppy drive. You can click the mouse or press any key
- to continue at this point.
-
- The second menu item is 'Floppy Information', selecting this
- item will open the default window and display a complete list of
- parameters about the active floppy drive including the number of
- tracks, the number of bytes, the number of sectors per cluster,
- the number of sectors per FAT and much more.
-
- The third menu item is 'Partition Information', this function will
- display a list of parameters (same as floppy information) base on
- the active hard drive partition.
-
- The next group of File menu items includes 'Create ST Mirror File'
- and 'Restore ST Mirror File'. First we'll cover creating a mirror
- file using 'Create ST Mirror File', this menu item will read the
- Boot, FAT tables and Directory sectors of the active hard drive
- partition and write them to a data file on the active floppy
- drive. It will also create a data file of the complete root
- directory listing of the partition. The directory listing file
-

-
-
-
-
-
- will let the user compare listings of two mirror files. The reason
- for this is that ST Mirror will check to see if the data files of
- the active partition already exist, if they do it will rename them
- to .BAK before writing the new ones. This way you will have two
- complete sets of data files on hand all the time.
-
- Now to the restore function. 'Restore ST Mirror File' will allow
- the user to restore the data in the mirror file back to the active
- hard drive partition. If you select the wrong data file the
- program will prompt you to this with an alert box and then place
- you back at the working screen to try again. Once a partition is
- restored the program will force a system reboot upon exiting to
- correct all of the system file pointers.
- Authors Note: If you want to see how this program works without
- trying it on your hard drive. Create a Ramdisk (about 100K) and
- place some files in it. Start the ST Mirror program, you will find
- that the ramdisk is treated just like a hard drive partition. How
- create a mirror file and then try the restore function.
-
- The 'Exit ST Mirror' menu item will terminate the program and
- return you back to the desk top.
-
- OPTIONS:
-
- The first item under the Options menu is 'Change Write Verify',
- clicking on this menu item will turn the write verify on or off.
- The write verify status is displayed in the upper righthand corner
- of the screen and defaults to ON.
-
- The second group of items under the Options menu are the format
- functions. The 'Format Floppy Disk' item will allow the user to
- format the floppy disk in either drive A or B.
-
- The 'Auto Format Data Disk' when clicked on will display a check
- mark to the left of the item name and format the disk in the
- active floppy drive before the mirror data file is written to it.
- This function will turn itself off after it has been used for the
- first time. This should help protect the user from formatting over
- current data on the active floppy disk.
-
- The last item under the Options menu is 'System Reboot', this
- function will allow the user to perform a warm start (just like
- pressing the reset button) on the system.
-
- DRIVES:
-
- Here you will be able to select the active floppy drive and hard
- drive partition. The default floppy drive is A: and hard drive
- partition is C:. Clicking on either a different floppy drive or
- hard drive partition will place a check mark to the left of the
- menu item. You will only be able to select from the active
- partitions and if none are found the 'Create ST Mirror File',
- 'Restore ST Mirror File' and 'Partition Information' items will
- be deactivated. The program will cover hard drive partitions
- ranging from C: to M: with a maximum partition size of fifteen
- (15) megabytes. This will allow for hard drives as large as 165
- megabytes.
-

-
-
-
-
-
- Authors Note: A Ramdisk can show up in the drive map as an active
- partition. If we ever see the release of TOS 1.4 which is suppose
- to support a 32 megabyte partition (like the IBM will) this
- program will be updated at that time, so be sure to register your
- copy with us.
-
- EXTRAS:
-
- The 'Data File Viewer' function will allow the user to view the
- root directory text listing generated when creating a mirror file.
- It will also display the name of the companion (.MIR) file for the
- current listing.
-
- The 'Set Time & Date' function is very important, if you do not
- have a real time clock installed in your system use this menu item
- to set the time and date. This will insure correct time and date
- stamping of the data files created with the ST Mirror program.
-
- HELP:
-
- This menu contains a list of all the menu items in the program.
- Selecting one of the items in this menu will display a brief
- explanation of the function. This should be used as a quick
- reference and NOT a guide to using the program.
-
- PROGRAM TIPS:
-
- DO NOT try to create a MIRROR file on an EMPTY PARTITION, this
- will cause the program to crash.
-
- We recommend using this program once a week and everytime you are
- about to perform any hard drive maintenance. If you were to run
- this program before any hard drive maintenance and then delete a
- file or folder by mistake, you could use the restore function to
- recover the file or folder that was deleted by returning the hard
- drive back to its original state before you started. This will not
- apply if you are using a hard drive optimizing program.
-
- This program was designed to cut down on the number of times you
- have to backup your hard drive and NOT to replace the hard drive
- backup procedure.
-
- We recommend using Turtle by George R. Woodside, this is an
- excellent file-by-file hard drive backup program. For more
- information on Turtle write to:

- Woodland Hills, CA 91364

-
- ST MIRROR UPDATES:
-
- Registered users of ST Mirror will receive program updates for
- $2.00 to cover material and postage. If an update becomes
- available the user will be notified by mail with a postcard.
